Soon after the fall of the Afghan government to the Taliban and the Texas anti-abortion law, liberals started to dust off their orientalist images of niqabi women. So when we use the images of the niqab to point out the injustices of American women or Western women we are stereotyping women who wear the veil as oppressive.
I wrote a book called Demystifying the Niqab: The History of The Face Veil, The Laws Against It, and Why it Matters.
The issue is, as always, the face veil is used in various ways but one. It isn’t shown as a normal outfit, something that someone like me would wear on a daily basis. Comical representation is okay with the veil as long as it is done right, like in Kim’s Convivence. The best thing I can say is that soft islamophobia is still islamophobia.
So you’ve been wanting to start a “modest” wardrobe….or perhaps you already have one and just want to know some basics. Modesty is such a subjective term and everyone has their own ideas about what is “modest” and what is not.
