It’s no secret that Trump hates any talk on climate change….. because you know….it’s “fake” news. It isn’t like climate change is a real problem that’s like going to first effect Island countries like the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, and the state of Hawaii. Taking away more and more land, with diverse ecosystems and cultures. Countries that surround water are also going to be hurt the most, especially Bangladesh which is mainly water already. Oh, you don’t care about brown people or Asians….well European lands in Italy will be greatly impaired by the rising tides, including the UK. We all know this is going to happen, after all, we’ve been told about our doom for as long as I can remember. They wonder why the millennial and gen-z generation are sooooo different and destroying companies of old? Perhaps it’s the constant image of “death” and “doom”, alongside apocalyptic media that affects us. Who knows?
The Trump administration has notified that it is officially withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement. “We will continue to work with our global partners to enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change and prepare for and respond to natural disasters,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, taken from npr. Every country, 200 that signed, have their own goals and have agreed to help pay poorer countries that suffer from climate change. While the US claims it’ll roll back carbon emissions by 2025, it most likely won’t.
The truth is deserts are spreading, forests are being cut down, crops like coffee are dying off, and etc. In fact, scientists found an oxygen-less part of the ocean, an ocean black hole, in the Persian Gulf the size of Florida. While these zones do happen naturally in the ocean, with global warming these spots are spreading. When the water at the surface of the ocean is warmer than the water below, it creates this layer of an oxygen-free zone in the water. The zone causes fish to leave because they can’t reach the surface or the deeper part of the water for food. Plantlife in these areas also die off. More interestingly, than death, bacteria switch over to producing…..ozone killing gas. That’s right the normal bacteria that usually produce gases begin to produce greenhouses gases. This in returns speeds up the process of global warming.
Yet what can we do? Is there hope besides the Paris agreement? Sure greenhouse gas emission does need to be checked; so does deforestation and desertification and these oxygen-less zones in the ocean. Creating jobs that combat global warming is important, including organizations that find solutions to deforestation and creating greener spaces. It is more than just using reusable straws and totes bags. We as a society need to put pressure on our local governments and our main government from preventing pipelines that destroy the environment. We also need to realize that by creating jobs that do plant trees or combat the ocean levels, we are loosing classic industrial jobs but gaining newer ones. With the increasing use of robots for basic jobs, like cashiering, we need ways to provide work for people. I personally believe that creating jobs to tackle global warming issues and figuring out engineering our own climate, not only fixes our world but will help future generations in terraforming planets.
Terraforming sounds scary to the average person but in reality, we might have to invest in it as citizens to keep our planet and species alive. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to lose my coffee or chocolate because some one-percenter is too greedy. We have no excuse to allow for this kind of corporate greed, hell every religion talks about this exact thing and tells us it is wrong. Ultimately it will lead to our downfall as a civilization. Industries are going to have to die and pave way for future ones, that is the way of things. If we wait around with our thumbs up our butts our planet will be dead and no longer can, we work at retail or restaurants because some machine is doing your job for you. If we have to trick people into going green by thinking of ways to get money out of helping the earth, then well….that’s better than living in an apocalyptic society with a Big Brother government.
Of course, this is all a Dunning-Kruger effect on my end, where I might believe I have some knowledge on something. I do not have knowledge of all the complexities it takes to fight global warming, but we can at least as a society try to inform ourselves of the basic science and make governments, companies, and ourselves responsible for the world.
